Argos Ltd [GB] is trading simply as Argos and one of the United Kingdom and Ireland’s largest merchandise distributor. The firm is a subsidiary of Sainsbury’s.
Argos trades both with physical shops and online. Argos boasts of its same-day delivery where most of its competitors fail in this field.
According to Mike Coupe, Sainsbury’s Group CEO; the company’s annual report for 2019 stated that the Group sales reached more than £3.2 billion (including VAT) which is higher by 2.1% during the same period the previous year.
Moreover, the underlying profit before tax is upped by 7.8% which amounts to £635 million, according to Coupe.
What is Argos?
Argos is British general merchandise where it retails both on their physical stores and online. The company currently has over 883 physical shops with about 29 million shoppers.
Their website has almost a billion visitors yearly which make the shop one of the biggest high street merchandiser across the United Kingdom.
Shoppers are treated with Argos’ courteous staff and high-end products mostly more competitive than other retailers. Over the years, Argos holds franchises in other parts of the world, such as China.
For those who don’t know; Argos’ website is the third most visited retail website in Great Britain. One of the reasons Argos is more popular than other stores, as we are made to believe and as we have read the customers response and reviews, is its courteous and kind staff.
But we might be jumping early into the conclusion; we can speak about it later.
Argos Financial Services
To help customers spread out the cost of purchases (in a defined period), Argos is providing credit assistance through the Argos Financial Services- AFS (formerly Argos Credit and Insurance).
AFS has been part of Sainsbury’s Bank since its takeover of Argos in 2016.
However, the company’s representative APR falls at 29.9% variable annually.
How Argos came to be it is today
Named after the Greek city of Argos, the company was founded by Richard Tompkins as a catalogue retailer on November 13, 1972. Tompkins was also the founder of the now-defunct Green Shield Stamps project.
Tompkins renamed Green Shield Stamps as Argos before the year ends in 1972. In 1979, BAT Industries purchased the brand.
In 1990, the firm was listed on the London Stock Exchange becoming a component of the FTSE 100 Index.
In the spring of 1998, GUS plc buys out the company becoming a part of Home Retail Group. GUS splits with the group in October 2016.
By the summer of 2013, 96% of the UK’s population was believed to be within 10 miles of an Argos store. In 2016, Argos’ parent Home Retail Group was purchased by Sainsbury’s for a whopping sum of £1.4 billion.
The acquisition led to a composition of a consortium called Sainsbury’s Argos.

Is Argos worth your money?
To some up our in-depth look at Argos, we ‘overheard’ some negative comments about the shop. But to our surprise, there were more ‘nice things’ customers have to say about Argos.
As we validate the customer reviews on TrustPilot, we are overwhelmed by the huge respondents on the review. There are over 94,400 reviewers (as of this writing) and most of them have something good to say about Argos.
For one, most reviews talked about Argos’ ‘always helpful staff’, ‘very good service by the staff’, and other comments. Also, most online shoppers commented on the shops ‘fast service’, ‘attention to details’, “just like in the pics”, and so much more.
However, it’s not all praises for Argos. Some disgusted customers made mention about ‘no receipt delivery’, ‘faulty earrings’, and others. Unsatisfied customers in Argos represent about 11% of the total respondents.
